Samsung accelerates 2nm process layout: Tyler fab plans mass production in 2026

Samsung Electronics is accelerating production preparations at its fab in Tyler, Texas, U.S., with plans to introduce a mass production line for the 2nm process in 2026. According to a report by Korean media outlet ZDNet, Samsung is internally discussing plans to install the required equipment as early as January to February 2026, according to the report. Originally, the plant planned to implement a 4nm process, but due to changes in market demand, it has been adjusted to a 2nm process.

After a number of delays, cleanroom construction at the Taylor fab restarted in the second quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The completion of the clean room is a prerequisite for equipment introduction. Samsung's investment in this project is expected to be relatively small in size, as it is the initial production line.

Samsung's Tyler plant was initially scheduled to begin production in 2024, but that timeline has been delayed several times due to demand uncertainty. As the project has been delayed, the city of Tyler has also adjusted its financial incentive agreement for the project, reducing its support.

On the customer front, Samsung has secured orders for its 2nm process from a number of domestic firms and a Japanese AI chip design company, but has yet to secure customers from major global tech companies, in stark contrast to its main competitor TSMC.

Meanwhile, Samsung is making steady progress on its 2nm chip development. According to media reports, the 2nm Exynos 2600 chip, which is expected to power the 2026 Galaxy S26 series, has entered the prototype mass production stage, and Samsung is aiming for a yield of more than 50 percent without compromising performance. If things go well, Samsung plans to start full production in early 2026.
