Sam Altman confirmed that there are no plans to release the next major version of the large language model ChatGPT in 2024. Instead, the company will focus on a new model codenamed "Strawberry Project," or GPT-o1. This model differs from its predecessors, taking a more systematic and cautious development approach to better support tasks requiring high precision and logical reasoning, such as mathematics and science.
Altman elaborated on why the company decided to prioritize GPT-o1 over launching another large model in parallel. He highlighted that as the complexity of these models grows, the company faces numerous constraints and tough choices in resource allocation. He stated:
“These models have become extremely complex, and we can’t run multiple projects in parallel as we used to. We face significant limitations and challenges in allocating computing resources.”
While striving to advance its technology, Altman also shared OpenAI’s vision for the future—creating AI "agents" capable of executing tasks autonomously and acting on behalf of users. Should this vision become a reality, it would mark a significant leap in AI capabilities, shifting beyond merely providing information to completing tasks with minimal human input.
