On October 9, 2025, AMD CEO Lisa Su confirmed in an interview that the upcoming Instinct MI450 GPU accelerator will be manufactured using TSMC's world-leading 2-nanometer (N2) process technology. This marks a significant technological leap for AMD in the high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) hardware sectors. The MI450 is expected to be based on AMD's future CDNA 5 architecture and is slated for official release in the second half of 2026. As AMD's first accelerator utilizing this advanced process and architecture, the MI450 is anticipated to deliver significant improvements in performance efficiency and power consumption control.

Compared to Nvidia's upcoming N3 process, AMD's use of the more advanced N2 process grants the MI450 higher transistor density and lower power consumption, bolstering its competitiveness in data center and AI training markets. Lisa Su specifically noted that the MI450 will introduce support for multiple precision formats and specialized instruction sets optimized for AI computing, further enhancing AI inference and training efficiency.

Additionally, OpenAI has confirmed its status as one of the first customers to adopt the Instinct MI450, with plans to begin deploying the hardware platform in the second half of 2026. This phased project is expected to generate billions of dollars in new revenue for AMD, solidifying its leadership position in the AI computing hardware market.
