Up to $ 2 billion! Intel plans to acquire the Israeli AI chip company

According to Calcalist, Israeli media, Intel is in advanced negotiations to acquire Israeli startup Habana Labs for $ 1 billion to $ 2 billion.

Reports indicate that if the deal is successful, it will become Intel's second largest acquisition in Israel. The first major acquisition was Intel's acquisition of autonomous driving chip company Mobileye in 2017.

When the AI chip company raised a Series B round last year, Intel's investment arm invested in the AI chip company Habana Labs. Industry sources say the Israeli company has raised about $ 120 million to date.

It is understood that Habana Labs was founded in 2016 and is committed to improving the processing performance of AI chips and reducing their cost and power consumption. Its AI chips are mainly aimed at the specific needs of deep neural network training.

Habana Labs is a fabless design company. The manufacturing of chips is left to third parties. According to official information, the company currently has 150 employees worldwide and has offices in Tel Aviv, San Jose, California, Beijing, and Gdansk, Poland.

Intel declined to comment on the acquisition. Habana Labs did not immediately respond to comment.

It is reported that Intel's current strategy is data-centric and AI is a very critical part of it. Intel already has AI chips from CPU, GPU, FPGA to ASIC.
