Apple COO: Qualcomm refuses to provide chips for the 2018 iPhone

In the early morning of January 15th, Beijing time, Apple's chief operating officer (COO) Jeff Williams said that after the company sued Qualcomm in 2017, the latter refused to provide cellular for the 2018 iPhone. modem.

Williams testified on Monday at the US Federal Trade Commission's (FCC) antitrust trial against Qualcomm that Apple exclusively used Intel's modems in the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR models released last September and October. It was caused by Qualcomm’s coercion, not the decision Apple chose to make. Williams said he had tried to negotiate with Qualcomm to provide chips for Apple's latest iPhone model, but was rejected by Qualcomm.

But in October 2017, Qualcomm said it had "tested and released to Apple" a modem that could be used on the new iPhone. Qualcomm said in a statement to Bloomberg at the time: "We are committed to supporting Apple's new devices, just as we support all other devices in the industry."

Apple executives testified earlier on Monday that the company prefers to be able to source parts from multiple suppliers. The executives said that sourcing chips from two suppliers would allow Apple to keep costs down, while also providing contingency plans for one of the suppliers when they had problems.

Williams testified that Qualcomm continues to provide chips for Apple's old iPhone models.

The US government alleged that Qualcomm used its position as the world's leading smartphone chip maker, forcing customers to use the company's products and forcing them to pay high patent license fees.
